History of the JESAM Development Office: The Jesuit Development Officers of Africa and Madagascar (JEDOAM) was begun in 2008 as a response to the growing fundraising needs of the 1600 Jesuits and their partners working in Africa and Madagascar.
It was
hoped that development officers of the 9 provinces and regions on the continent
could:-
a) share
best practices
b) come
together for speakers and workshops on skill enhancement, and
c) support
collaboration across province boundaries in data collection, donor recruitment
and project submissions.
Since 2010,
it has been a stated goal of those participating in JEDOAM that greater
collaboration and coordination was needed between Jesuit provinces among
themselves and with non-Jesuit organizations.
In its
first few years, a strongly stated goal of the officers was for a central
office to facilitate collaboration. In October 2012, the idea of such an
office, the JESAM Development Office (JDO) based in Nairobi, Kenya was begun.
At the
JEDOAM 2013 meeting in Harare, Zimbabwe it became clear that a central office
should be tasked with coordinating data, communication, tracking donors,
minimizing repetition of requests, and maximizing long-term local and
international funding.
Later
approval of the Provincials of Africa (April) and a subcommittee for focused
the goals of the JDO as:
i.
Formation – support of 650 men preparing for the priesthood and the 5 colleges
based in five countries that train these men.
ii.
Province Development Office Capacity Building and Collaboration – support of
the growth of 8 development offices serving in 10 provinces/regions impacting
312 projects in 30 countries on the continent
In June of
2014 the JDO moved to its current office at the Hekima College Institute for
Peace Studies and International Relations and employed 2 full time persons in the
fields of strategic planning, grant writing, and communications.
